English Language Learner Department

The English Language Department began its mission on July 1, 2002. We currently have about seven hundred English Language Learners (ELLs) in our school.

The most important part of our mission at Visions In Education is to make sure we serve our ELLs to the best of our ability as we comply with the state of California's requirements for ELLs.

Our basis for compliance with State Legal Requirements is the Federal Laws beginning in 1974 and various state laws. This includes the latest state law, Proposition 227, passed in 1997.

ELL Services We Provide

  • Administering the CELDT (California English Language Development Test.)
  • Determining the Language Acquisition level of each student through the CELDT.
  • Providing appropriate materials according to each student's level of English Language Development through curriculum placement testing.
  • Giving a Primary Language Survey to determine the level of Primary Language Development.
  • Having an ELL assistant who speaks Russian and Ukrainian, the two languages spoken by the majority of our ELL students.
  • Consulting with teachers on curriculum, appropriateness of materials, cultural awareness, test results, and students' academic achievements.
  • Providing English Language Development classes and tutoring sessions to expand and extend each ELL's English Language Development in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
  • Providing our ELLs with materials and textbooks that are appropriate for language development as well as having qualified teachers to teach the curriculum and determine the progress of students.
  • Assigning them to teachers who are CLAD credentialed. This certificate helps teachers to be aware of cultural differences as well as the best use of strategies and methodologies to make teaching materials more comprehensible.

ELL Assistant

The ELL Assistant translates the parent letters and other important information and documents into Russian and Ukrainian to make everything more meaningful and understandable for the students' families. The Trilingual ELL Assistant also attends meetings and conferences with parents to help them, teachers, and administrators achieve better communication regarding students' needs.
