Student Success Stories2007-2008 Student Success StoriesScripps-Howard National Spelling BeeCongratulations to Josephine Kao, Home School Academy 7th grade student, who won the California Central Spelling Bee for the third year in a row. Winning the California Central Spelling Bee allowed Josephine to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., on May 25-31, 2008. Josephine advanced one more round this year in the semi-finals than in her 2007 appearance. This year, Josephine advanced to the seventh round. Out of 288 competitors, only 15 spellers outlasted her and only 12 advanced to the finals. Congratulations Josephine! 2007-2008 Youth Inspire! AwardThe Visions In Education students listed below are recipients of the 2007-2008 Youth Inspire! Award:
Youth Inspire! is an annual recognition project, which provides Sacramento residents the opportunity to anonymously nominate young people, ages 5 to 21, who inspire them by demonstrating strength of character, heroic resilience and/or community service. Their mission is to provide positive recognition to deserving students in Sacramento. Congratulations to our award winners. Program AcceptanceKelcie Lee, 11th grade Home School Academy student, has been accepted in the University of California, San Francisco, Biomedical and Health Sciences Internship for high school students which will take place this summer. Geography BeeCongratulations to Daniel MacKay, Home School Academy 6th grade student, who won the Visions In Education Charter School Geography Bee. After winning the VIE Geography Bee, Daniel was one of 100 students who were selected out of 2,000 students to participate in the State Geography Bee. Maidu Library Poetry ContestCongratulations to Megan Smith, Home School Academy 12th grade student, who won first place in the Maidu Library Poetry Contest. 2006-2007 Student Success StoriesThe 2006-2007 VarsityBooks Achieving Beyond Scholarship WinnersThis year, VarsityBooks provided two scholarships available to graduating seniors at Visions In Education. Students submitted an essay describing their challenges and achievements in high school and how Visions In Education helped them to be prepared to achieve their goals for higher education and beyond. "Dare to Be Yourself" Art Contest WinnersVisions In Education sponsored a fine arts competition this year and we are proud to announce the winners of the “Dare to Be Yourself” Art Contest!
A Reception and art show was held on March 22nd to display art work submitted by our high school contestants as well as our Elementary and Middle School participants. The following student musicians performed at the reception; Blake Dolve, Elijah Dove, Kristin Brune, Nicholas Brune, Josilynn Hudson, Ryan Hudson, Joey Koppell, Amy Miller and Melissa Miller. Youth Inspire! is a collaborative effort, with partners from the California Parks and Recreation Society, Elk Grove Unified School District, Folsom Cordova Unified School District, Sacramento City Unified School District, Sacramento City Department of Parks and Recreation, Sacramento County Office of Education, and San Juan Unified School District. Congratulations to our award winners. Congratulations to Josephine Kao!Josephine Kao outlasted 65 other spellers to capture the 24th Annual California Central Valley Spelling Bee trophy March 7, 2007. Her victory was the second in a row for the Visions sixth-grader. She became eligible for the event first by winning the Visions Spelling Bee in January and then scoring in the top 66 on a written test for the region's school-site winners. More than 200,000 students were eligible in Sacramento, Colusa, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Solano, Sutter and Yuba counties. She will compete in the national Scripps-Howard Bee in Washington, D.C., May 30-31.
